State Pushes for Tighter Regulations on Nursing Homes

Governor John Kasich is pushing for tighter regulations on nursing homes in Ohio. This push comes as a result of inconsistent levels of quality care across Ohio’s 929 nursing home facilities. Governor Kasich’s plan to improve the quality of care in these facilities is designed to offer incentives to facilities that offer higher levels of care.

Governor Kasich argues that without proper incentives for providing top quality care there is no reason for these nursing homes to spend extra time and resources on making sure they are going beyond basic needs. This is proven by the fact that Ohio recently finished below the national average in all ten quality measures of nursing homes.

These regulations would allow for nonprofit nursing homes to compete with profit nursing homes by giving them more funding depending on the level of care they are providing for their residents. Additionally, these regulations will hopefully address staffing levels, occupancy, complaints and ownership by county.

Leeseberg Tuttle applauds Governor Kasich’s efforts to hold nursing homes throughout the state accountable. Most of the lawsuits we have brought on behalf of injured nursing home patients stem from easily preventable mistakes. For instance, some of the most common cases we see are those involving decubitus ulcers, or bed sores, which can be prevented by merely repositioning a patient every few hours.

The attorneys at Leeseberg Tuttle have significant experience handling nursing home negligence cases. If you or a loved one has been affected by nursing home abuse or neglect, please contact us to see if we can be of assistance.
