Study Suggests "Doctors Who Get Sued Are Likely to Get Sued Again"

A disturbing study conducted by researchers analyzing paid malpractice claims using the National Practitioner Data Bank reveals that doctors who get sued once, are twice as likely to have another claim made against them. That percentage continues to grow with each and every claim made after that: four times as likely for one who had four claims and 12 times more likely for a provider with 6 or more claims made against them.

Of course, this is a natural progression - malpractice claims against doctors indicates poor quality of care and bad doctors are more likely to continue to make mistakes. What is most notable is that one percent of all doctors account for roughly one-third of all paid malpractice claims. That means that in a hypothetical of 100 malpractice claims in a field of 100 doctors, that one doctor is responsible for 33 of those claims, while the remaining 99 doctors split the other 67 claims between them. This is a disturbing statistic that highlights the necessity to identify doctors accumulating multiple claims against them who pose a significant threat to the health care system.

It is important that patients hold bad physicians accountable so they don't have the opportunity to make more mistakes on future patients. If you or someone you know believe you have been the victim of medical negligence, please contact us to see if we can be of assistance to you.
